Hello! I’m Patty Hume, an artist and designer based in Los Angeles & Joshua Tree, California.
I’m originally from the midwest (Cleveland, Ohio). I have a BFA in Fiber from the Cleveland Institute of Art. I earned my master’s degree at the University of Pennsylvania in Landscape Architecture & Regional Planning. Over the years I have designed many award winning landscapes, public spaces, green walls, and interiors around the world. In 2009, I founded BREAKurban, a small boutique design firm that focused on residential landscape design and public spaces.
In early 2018, I decided to re-focus my studio practice on my fine art work & personal design projects. My newly renovated studio is located in Joshua Tree, at our magical second home Spirit Wind. I’m excited to start working on a new body of work in my new studio in the desert. As time goes on I’ll be sharing more of that work here and on Instagram @pattyhume .
The Official Bio
Patty (Lundeen) Hume is an artist, designer and realtor based in Los Angeles (Echo Park) and Joshua Tree, California. She is an expert at place making, place branding and creating experiences that excite the senses.
She received her BFA in Fiber from the The Cleveland Institute of Art. She went on to earn a master’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania in Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning. During her time in Philadelphia, Patty apprenticed at The Fabric Workshop and Museum. After PENN Patty worked for Margie Ruddick landscape in Germantown, PA as a Landscape Designer on east-coast residential and public projects.
Patty moved to Los Angeles in 2002 and joined the core studio at WET Design, the people who created The Fountains of the Bellagio in Las Vegas. As a Senior Designer at WET, Patty designed, detailed and choreographed one-of-a-kind water features and public spaces. She also master planned the role of water in large city scale projects. During this time she spent a great deal of time in Asia and the Middle East. In 2007 she became Manager of the Design at WET and took over managing a talented team of architects, landscape designers, industrial designers, choreographers and consultants.
In 2009 Patty founded BREAKurban, a multi-disciplinary design studio in Echo Park, California. She consulted on a number of residential landscape projects in Los Angeles, green walls and public spaces around the world. All of her projects are contextual, one-of-a-kind and crafted with deep thought about the experiences people will have in the spaces. Part of her design work was focused on site selection for new construction in southern California. This work led her to get her real estate license in 2014.
In early 2016, Patty and her husband Jonathan were drawn to the California desert and bought a second home in Joshua Tree. Their property, Spirit Wind is a magical, otherworldly place. Spending time here has profoundly changed their lives and inspired them in a number of ways.
In early 2018, Patty began the process of rebranding and refocusing her art/design studio. Over the last few years her primary focus has shifted to her real estate practice. She plans to spend her free time in her newly renovated art studio in Joshua Tree working on her fine art work and self directed design projects. She will continue to consult on select design projects that are a particularly good fit, as time allows on a more limited basis.
For Patty, travel and observing the world (at all scales) is an important part of her design process. She has visited 45+ countries. Some of her most recent travels have taken her to Tierra del Fuego, Patagonia, Uruguay, Hong Kong and Bali. She recently returned from a road trip to Arizona and New Mexico and is deeply interested in studying the American south west and desert culture.
