Hello!

Screen Shot 2018-04-06 at 5.01.57 PMA Short Intro

Hello! I’m Patty Hume. I’m an artist and designer based in Joshua Tree, California. I work primarily on landscape, interior and textile projects for myself and for clients all over the world.

Originally from the midwest, I earned a BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art in Fiber. My master’s degree is from the University of Pennsylvania in Landscape Architecture & Regional Planning.

Over the years I have designed many award winning landscapes, water features, public spaces, green walls, and interiors across three continents. My work has been featured in Dwell, California Lifestyle, Sunset Magazine, Landscape Architecture Magazine and many other publications.

I founded Patty Hume studio (previously called BREAKurban) in 2009 to focus on landscape design and public spaces, but since then I have expanded the scope to work on interiors and textiles. In 2020, I expanded my services to remote services so I can work with clients all over the world from my rural desert studio.

My husband Jonathan and I love to renovate houses and we are always working new projects. You can stay at our vacation rentals in Joshua Tree and 29 Palms: Spirit Wind, Beavertail and (coming soon) El Bandito.

The Official Bio

Patty Hume

Patty (Lundeen) Hume is an artist and designer based in Joshua Tree, California. She is an expert at place making, place branding and creating experiences that excite the senses.

She received her BFA in Fiber from the The Cleveland Institute of Art. She went on to earn a master’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania in Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning. During her time in Philadelphia, Patty apprenticed at The Fabric Workshop and Museum. After PENN Patty worked for Margie Ruddick landscape in Germantown, PA as a Landscape Designer on east-coast residential and public projects.

Patty moved to Los Angeles in 2002 and joined the core studio at WET Design, the people who created The Fountains of the Bellagio in Las Vegas. As a Senior Designer at WET, Patty designed, detailed and choreographed one-of-a-kind water features and public spaces. She also master planned the role of water in large city scale projects. During this time she spent a great deal of time in Asia and the Middle East. In 2007 she became Manager of the Design at WET and took over managing a talented team of architects, landscape designers, industrial designers, choreographers and consultants.

In 2009 Patty founded BREAKurban, a multi-disciplinary design studio in Echo Park, California. She consulted on a number of residential landscape projects in Los Angeles, green walls and public spaces around the world. All of her projects are contextual, one-of-a-kind and crafted with deep thought about the experiences people will have in the spaces. Her work has been featured in Dwell, California Lifestyle, Sunset Magazine, Landscape Architecture Magazine and many other design publications.

In the early 2010’s Patty’s design work was focused on site selection for new construction in southern California for high end residential developers. This work led her to get her real estate license in 2014. Since becoming a realtor, she has expended real estate interests to become a  LEED AP, property manager, Airbnb Super host and real estate investor. You can read more on her real estate blog www.pattyhumerealestatee.com.

In early 2016, Patty and her husband Jonathan were drawn to the California desert and bought a home in Joshua Tree. Their property, Spirit Wind is a magical, otherworldly place. Spending time there profoundly changed their lives and inspired them in a number of ways and led them to buy more properties in the desert. They now spend most of their time at El Bandito, their 22.5 acre compound on the edge of Joshua Tree and 29 Palms.

For Patty, travel and observing the world (at all scales) is an important part of her design process. She has visited 47+ countries. Some of her most recent travels have taken her to India, Tierra del Fuego, Patagonia, Hong Kong and Bali. She recently returned from a road trip through Arizona and New Mexico and is deeply inspired by the American south west and desert culture.
